German renewables come of age

Production of renewable electricity in Germany matched or exceeded that of coal and of nuclear in the first nine months of 2011, according to the latest statistical reports. Renewables' output over the period amounted to 87.2 TWh, compared with 76.2 TWh in the equivalent months of 2010, according to statistics group AG Erneuerbare Energien. Meanwhile energy and water federation BDEW reported renewables output at 81.5 TWh over the period, or 21% of gross electricity generation of 388 TWh.
