RWE's HKM retrofit completed

A second unit at RWE's power station on steel company HKM property in Huckingen is due back on line in a month, after steam turbine and control system retrofits as boiler refurbishment at an investment of €35 million. Similar work was completed on the first unit in 2009. Gross output of each unit has been increased to 320 MW from 307 MW. The units were commissioned in 1975 and 1976.RWE's power station cooperation with HKM was extended in 2009 and runs to 2024. HKM delivers blast furnace and coking plant gas to the power station and receives around a third of the electricity generated from the fuel. HKM has the contractual right to market a share of the remaining generation. RWE markets most of the electricity, and uses natural gas to augment the blast furnace and coking plant gas when needed.
