Ofgem opens GB to continental balancing

Ofgem has approved implementation of the Trans-European Replacement Reserves Exchange (TERRE) in the GB balancing market, the UK energy regulator said August 24. The decision presages a major change for the UK and continental balancing of electricity networks, allowing system operators in Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Czech Republic, Romania, Poland and Hungary to exchange the balancing energy needed to maintain steady frequency across Europe’s high voltage electricity networks.
