The international investors in the Tengiz, Karachaganak and Kashagan hydrocarbon projects in Kazakhstan may have to bear the brunt of the determination of President Nursultan Nazarbayev to place all hydrocarbons operations in the country on the same tax footing, industry observers said late March. Nazarbayev, the leader of Kazakhstan for the last 20 years, who was comfortably re-elected in general elections held April 3, is widely expected to increase the state's influence over the projects.
