Spain’s Repsol to start 2.5 MW electrolyzer at Petronor refinery in late 2022

Spain’s Repsol plans to start a 2.5 MW electrolyzer to produce hydrogen at its Petronor refinery in the second half of 2022, the company said Sept. 20. The capacity is slightly higher than the 2 MW previously announced. The electrolyzer will involve an investment of Eur8.9 million ($10.4 million), which will also cover the cost of the hydrogen distribution infrastructure required, Repsol said in a statement. The hydrogen produced will feed Petronor’s 220,000 b/d Bilbao refinery, and also supply the nearby Margen Izquierda Technology Park, in the municipality of Abanto-Zierbena. The company plans to expand its electrolyzer capacity over the coming years, with 10 MW scheduled to be commissioned in the port of Bilbao in 2024, in collaboration with Enagas and the Basque Energy Agency (EVE).
