Scottish port signs option with XLCC for HVDC cable manufacturing

Peel Ports Clydeport has signed an option agreement with new UK cable company XLCC for a 70-acre site at Hunterston Port in Ayrshire, west Scotland for the production of high voltage direct current cables for use in the offshore wind sector, Peel Ports Clydeport said Aug. 25. UK offshore wind farm developers are under pressure to increase the UK content in their projects, having always sourced cabling from foreign companies like ABB, GE, Siemens, Prysmian and Nexans. The industry has committed to boosting UK content to 60% by 2030. “The [two factory] development requires investment in the order of GBP370 million ($508 million) for buildings and plant, with another GBP200 million for a commissioned specialist ship capable of transporting the massively heavy cable reels. The vessel would be shared with a third XLCC factory planned for Wales,” Peel Ports Clydeport said.
