French grid operator RTE starts RINGO battery storage pilot project

French grid operator RTE has started the first of three large battery storage assets in France to be linked in a pilot project to balance grid fluctuations in real-time, it said July 2. The Eur80 million ($95 million) RINGO project is to link batteries in Eastern and Western France as well as the Alps with a combined 32 MW, allowing for 100 MWh storage. The first 10 MW battery at Vingeanne in the Cote d’Or region near Dijon in Eastern France has now been put into operation, it said. A similar battery at Bellac in the Western Nouvelle-Acquitaine region is to follow later this year with a third battery to start in March 2022 at Ventavon in the Hautes-Alpes region.
