Poland's president Duda signs law broadening definition of wood used in energy

Poland’s president Andrzej Duda signed into law Aug 27 amendments to the Renewable Energy Act that broaden the definition of energy wood, which environmental groups say will lead to deforestation and increased co-firing by generators. The new definition, which the Environment Ministry says will allow the State Forests to remove timber from forests that has not been collected since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, will be applicable from October 1 until December 31, 2021. Earlier this month, Greenpeace Poland accused the government of wanting to increase the profits of State Forests, the state company responsible for logging, which has lost more than Zloty 600 million ($160 million) due to coronavirus restrictions.
