Tradeable GOs key to grow EU hydrogen market: German energy lobby

Trading standardized guarantees of origin are a key way for the EU to meet its ambitions to develop a commodity-scale hydrogen market, according to the head of energy trading at Germany energy industry lobby group BDEW, Marcel Steinbach. The European Commission wants to see the EU massively scale up its low-carbon and renewable “green” hydrogen production and demand in the coming years to help the bloc become climate-neutral by 2050. It is working on a terminology to be able to distinguish between hydrogen products based on their carbon content, to ensure traceability to their source, but developing tradeable GOs is more important, Steinbach told a webinar hosted by Energy Post on July 15.
