Projections of a drop of almost 5 TWh in Belgian electricity consumption by 2025 compared to original forecasts will be used as a parameter for calculation Belgium’s future capacity needs, Belgian regulator, the CREG, said July 22. The CREG was putting forward a proposal on calculation of the parameters for the first four year-ahead auction, to be held next year, which is based on the results of a public consultation by Belgian transmission system operator Elia. Elia was originally projecting 0.75% annual growth in electricity demand, but the assumption now is that the Covid-induced drop in consumption will be equivalent to an average annual decrease of 0.15% on the initial forecast. That leads to a demand projection for 2025 of 84.9 TWh as opposed to 89.6 TWh. This has been built into Elia’s proposed reference scenario.
