Well known throughout the industry for his work on tower cranes, Syd's career started in the 1970s as an owner driver providing transport & haulage services. In 2001 Syd joined Select Plant Hire Co Ltd (Tower Crane Division) as operations manager. This was a time of change for Syd and Select as both grew in reputation. In the later years at SPH, as the team he had helped to shape gained their own experience and knowledge, Syd moved to Performance Management for the SPH newly titled division of lifting Solutions'. A principled man, he was not afraid to question or confront a member of the TCIG (which he later chaired) and CPA member representatives. He engaged with the workforce, and all involved with the installation of tower cranes. He listened to their suggestions and, when asked, offered his opinion. He brought new and fresh ideas, changed processes, implemented new procedures, and actively promoted the communication of best practice values that would ensure a sustainable future for all.
