Air Force Blues: A visit to Wright-Patterson

As I steer my rented Ford Escape through the early-morning Ohio mist, I see the hangars begin to emerge from the fog. Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton, Ohio, is perhaps most famous as the home of the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force. Somehow, despite 40 years of flying back and forth across the States and logging time in two-dozen military fighters and trainers, I've never managed to make it to what many regard as the best aviation museum on the planet.rnCertainly, it one-ups even the spectacular Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in the sheer number of military airplanes on display (if not the extravagance of the displays themselves).
