BP Amoco may join the race to build a huge natural gas pipeline from the Arctic and has named a veteran of Alaskan operations to head its Canadian unit as a first step. It is evaluating whether to build a multibillion-dollar natural gas pipeline south from Alaska and the Mackenzie Valley in Canada's Northwest Territories, or lend its support to an existing proposal. There are two big proposals: Foothills Pipe Lines, co-owned by TransCanada PipeLines and Westcoast Energy, first proposed building the Alaska Natural Gas Transmission System (ANGTS) with its U.S. partner in 1976 and another project to transport Mackenzie Valley gas in 1988.
