The oil and natural gas industry is United States and has I been identified along with the ener-gy sector as one of the critical infrastructures that deserve special consideration in the Department of Homeland Security's National Strategy for the Physical Protection of Critical Infrastructures and Key Assets. Security of the nation's vast and distributed oil and natural gas production, transportation, distribution and control infrastructure provides unique challenges.. The most obvious challenge is the physical security of more than 160,000 miles of crude oil and gas transportation infrastructure, exploration and production facilities, refineries, and the transportation and distribution infrastructure - all that operate in different state and local jurisdictions. Though it is appropriate and prudent to focus upon protection of industry resources against the obvious physical threats in today's world, it is critical that the industry address the security requirements of the electronic systems that are vital to the integrity and business operations of the oil and natural gas infrastructure. Attacks on computing resources of U.S. industry continue.
