INGAA Foundation Reinforces Pipeline Safety Stance

The Interstate Natural Gas Association of America (INGAA) Foundation met April 6-8 at the Las Colinas Four Seasons resort in Irving, TX with a tight schedule focusing on pipeline safety, public outreach and preparing for an uncertain future. Attendance was strong, although not a record, with 175 participants. Several speakers used the opportunity to discuss the complicated relationship between pipelines and politics. John Hofmeister, author of "Why We Hate the Oil Companies" and retired CEO of Shell Oil, called for an apolitical regulation agency for pipelines and energy in the model of the Federal Reserve Board and monetary policy. Don Santa, president of the INGAA Foundation, summarized current concerns and possible legislation under discussion in Washington, DC. Jeff Wiese, associate administrator for PHMSA under the Department of Transportation, made the case that when it comes to avoiding accidents across the bell curve of companies, "a strong regulator is the best line of defense."
