Santa Cruz, CA, population 62,864, is a coastal, university enclave situated 75 miles south of San Francisco on the northern edge Monterey Bay in the southern part Northern California. A college town with a branch of the University of California and all the trappings, it also is the location for a corridor of one of Pacific Gas and Electric Co.'s (PG&E) major north-south, large-diameter natural gas transmission pipelines, not unlike one 50 miles to the north that ruptured causing a fatal explosion in September 2010 that carried sea changes still being felt nearly six years later.
