AGL uses trenchless technology to install 20 mi of MDPE pipe

Atlanta Gas Light Co. (AGL) is using directional drilling to install 20 mi of plastic gas distribution mains within Atlanta, Georgia. Decades-old, 2 through 12-in. bare steel and cast iron gas distribution mains are being replaced with 2, 4, and 6-in. medium-density polyethylene (MDPE) pipe. The work is part of a larger, 10-year project to replace more than 2,300 mi of bare steel and cast iron pipe throughout the state. Some 244 mi are scheduled to be replaced this year. Of that, some 80% will be installed by directional drilling.
