Taiwan: Fiber-hungry paper industry is a recycling leader

For the past 50 years, Taiwan's paper industry has grown significantly, moving from annual production of 20,000 metric tons (tonnes) in the 1940s to 4.34 million tonnes in 1996. This represents 200-fold growth from 1947 to 1996. The number of paper mills, based on the data of the Taiwan Paper Industry Association (TPIA), has increased from 20 to 147, and annual per capita consumption of paper and board has grown from 2 to 212 kilograms, ranking 10th internationally.
