Towerless suspension bridge to span valley in Greece

When completed in 2005, the Metsovitikos Bridge, a towerless suspension structure, will hover 150 m above the Metsovitikos River in the Pindos Mountains. The bridge is part of the Egnatia Odos, a 680 km highway project linking the western coast of Greece to the Turkish border. Drivers will emerge from tunnels on either end of the bridge through conical openings. "It's very dramatic; the altitude of the mountains is approximately a thousand meters so there is quite a view," says Ian Wilson, the project manager for bridge design at the London-based firm Arup.
