LG Telecom launches low-priced Rev. A service to challenge HSPA

South Korea's smallest cellco, LG Telecom, has launched a full-blown 1xEV-DO Rev. A service, but local analysts say the platform might not challenge the WCDMA/HSDPA market significantly in the long term. The Rev. A network's nationwide deployment was completed in January, and LGT unveiled its full-blown Oz service April 3, featuring the country's lowest data charges: KRW6,000 (US$6) a month for 1GB of data usage. The rock-bottom price took rival SK Telecom by surprise, and the operator - which has about 4.5 million WCDMA/HSDPA subs - was forced to bring forward the launch of its KRW10,000 flat-rate data tariff to April 1.
