With the expense and risk of new exploration, and the high prices of crude, operators are paying a great deal more attention to optimising the recovery rate from both existing and new reservoirs. Critical to the success of optimised production is the ability to thoroughly understand the structural characteristics of a reservoir and its surrounding interwell space. In the past, techniques such as 3-D surface seismic have been an operator's best choice for gaining an understanding of reservoir dynamics. Unfortunately, this technology is limited to generating mostly workable aerial views of a reservoir. Yet, a thorough understanding of the reservoir's vertical heterogeneity is absolutely critical for optimised recovery.
