Aimed at the country's student population, the subsidized Aakash (meaning sky) supports web browsing and video conferencing, has a three-hour battery life and two USB ports. The feature list is good. However, questions remain over how it will perform. Will it be a craze amongst students it is made for? Will the commercial version of the tablet called UbiSlate be used by businesses? And most importantly will it be able to deface the digital divide and enable people in rural areas to have access to common Internet activities? If it does, surely it will be a true 'made in India' thing and we should be proud of it. Hats on to HRD officials, Datawind and IIT Rajasthan students for giving India such a low cost device.
