The competition among truckers can be fierce, about as heated as cabs cruising for business in Hew York City. Just ask John Barnes, a 54-year-old independent truck driver from Pensaeola, Florida, who drives freight as far as Seattle. It can be difficult, according to Barnes, to find a load to carry back east so that he doesn't return empty-handed after dropping off a delivery. But that got easier last October when Landstar System, the firm he works for exclusively, made its database of available shipments accessible from Internet-ready phones. Now Barnes simply uses his Mitsubishi T250 phone to access the freight list from wherever he is and picks the best haul. "Since I went to the phone," says Barnes. "I've increased my revenue by about $30,000 per year."
