Like most serious writers, I get my best ideas when I'm in the bathroom. Just the other day in the men's room here at the office, I looked down and saw a discarded printout of a Slate magazine movie review on the floor. Slate, of course, is an online magazine, but someone had printed out the review and left it in the stall. Maybe it was the time and place, but I couldn't help thinking: What a colossal waste! This is exactly the kind of shortsighted, casual paper consumption that makes the modern office the white-collar environmental equivalent of a strip mine.
