ICS calls upon Paris MOU for harmonised approach to low sulphur rules

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) is calling for port state control (PSC) inspections to adopt a harmonised approach when it comes to the implementation of the 0.1 per cent sulphur emission control areas (ECAs). It has written to the Paris Memorandum of Understanding on Port State Control to highlight inspections issues where it believes that it is vital that a harmonised approach is developed by the Paris MOU before the implementation date of 1 January 2015. ICS said that it was "concerned that information collected by its member national ship owners' associations suggests that many governments are not yet prepared to implement the requirements in a uniform manner, in order to ensure the prevention of a potentially serious market distortion."
