SECURITY TRAINING IS MANDATORY FOR ALL ONBOARD PERSONNEL

Cruise ship and ferry operators must ensure that all crew, including catering, hotel and entertainment staff, have received security-related training. Under the 2010 amendments to the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), everyone serving on a seagoing vessel needs to have this training, whether or not they have specific duties on board. IMO has already given shipowners a grace period for compliance, which means that passenger shipping operators should act now if they have not already done so. STCW security training can be delivered through e-learning processes that enable staff to conduct the training online and at their own pace. V.Group subsidiary Marlins has gained approval from the UK's Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the Isle of Man and Liberia for its e-learning course. Marlins manager Catherine Logie said some ship operators may not be aware this covers all onboard personnel. "This is very important for cruise shipping, as it covers all the crew. Even the catering and entertainment staff on the ships need security training, as well as the seafarers," she explained.
