Reflecting on the past, thinking about the future. Arguably, this is one of the main functions of any handbook. Michael Fritsch, the editor, and the contributors to this specific handbook on the relationship between entrepreneurship and regional development manage just that. The book offers excellent retrospective reviews of important aspects of regional entrepreneurship (itsdeterminants in Chapter 3, its effects in Chapter 4, the role of institutions in Chapters 7 and 8 and the role of universities in Chapter 9). The authors critically reflect on the development of the field and they offer guidance on how to develop it. In addition, the book includes two original studies on the effects of entrepreneurship (productivity in Chapter 5 and employment in Chapter 6), effectuating some of the research avenues distinguished earlier.
