Missing link in process efficiency enhancement

During the last years all kinds of data related systems have gained significant progress in pulp and paper industry. In the area of process management, distributed control systems (DCS), quality control systems (QCS), web inspections systems (WIS) and process historians are standard in modern mills. On-line-measurement instruments have reached such level that their readings can really be trusted as long as the equipment is maintained properly. Simulation and modeling are used on a limited scale. At the mill and the corporate level, manufacturing execution systems (MES) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems are respectively widely used.
