Mill shutdowns are forthcoming over the next few months

Forest industry companies are curtailing their production in Finland due to their recent difficulties in securing a sufficient supply of roundwood for their mills. The situation may become extremely critical during the autumn and winter of 2008, thus forcing companies to permanently close down a number of their mills, as a dramatic continuation of their already implemented production reductions. - If the situation does not improve over the autumn period, major rearrangements will be inevitable, summarised Jussi Pesonen, UPM President and CEO, at a press conference held in late April 2008. Stora Enso is planning pulp mill shutdowns for the next few months. Provided that domestic roundwood sales remain at their current inert level, and if Russia raises its roundwood export duties by an overwhelming degree as planned, Stora Enso, a company that is extremely dependent on roundwood imports, will have to implement a massive additional capacity reduction programme.
