Decision making under uncertainty: case studies on TMP production scheduling

Scheduling is an important decision-making process in process industries. As a research area it is challenging and has high practical importance. This article presents three different problem formulations for the scheduling of TMP production. Common objective is to minimize overall electricity costs. The first two formulations are deterministic, the third takes into account the stochastic nature of the process: the uncertainty in the production cost and demand is studied. The stochastic problem is analytically transformed into a deterministic optimization task, and the probability distributions of the stochastic variables are calculated directly rather than with Monte Carlo simulations.
