A Papermaker's Basic Guide to PCC

Suppose a group of papermakers from 1907 was able to come back to a modern, world-class paper mill today. What would they see? Their initial reaction might well be how familiar and recognizable the paper machine appeared. They'd recognize the headbox, fourdrinier wire, couch roll, press section, first section dryers, a size press, the second section dryers and a calender stack (well, the "stack" might now be only a soft roll calendering system). Quite amazingly, they'd exclaim, the paper machine hadn't changed its appearance all that much in the past 100 years. But, sizing systems and fillers... well, that's another story! The industryrnhas come a long way in the past century. In this article we'll be focusing on just one of these new developments - that of PCC (Precipitated Calcium Carbonate) and how beneficial it has proven to be over the past 40 years.
