Dueto its geographical location, Indonesia has a very good potential to be a leader in the global pulp and paper industry, according to the Indonesian Pulp and Paper Association (APKI). The tropical climate of Indonesia allowed for a significantly higher growth rate for the main production material, i.e. trees. The harvesting cycle of pulpwood in tropical zone took only around 6 years instead of up to 60 years in temperate or boreal zones in the West. As such, significantly less quantity of land is required to yield the same amount of wood. Thus, in addition to having a much higher productivity, by developing plantation forest in Indonesia, the pulp and paper industry's global impact on the environment is reduced, the association said in a statement issued by its chairman, M.Mansur recently.
