In an excerpt from a speech given at the 2011 SPCI Conference in Stockholm, Sweden, Leif Broden, CEO of Sodra, defined several steps the industry can take today to combat climate change and foster real sustainable action for the environment. The first step on the path to true sus-tainability is to consider climate change. While we often think of the forest as a carbon-neutral closed loop, global deforestation is actually still occurring at the rate of 0.2% per year. Given that more than 20% of the earth's carbon emissions into the atmosphere come from deforestation, it's not rocket science to calculate that stopping deforestation would have an immediate impact on greenhouse gases, reducing them by some 20%. Can we stop it?Yes, we can. It's now quite hard to deforest Indonesia to any significant extent because, sadly, the job is done. For that reason alone, it should be possible to slow the rate.
