摘要

The purpose of this study is to analyze the present situation and review the developments made in the first decade of this century (2000-2009). The study is delimited to formal courses and contents taught at university level. In data collection structured interviews with the academic staff of thirteen universities were conducted telephonically. The findings reveal that; most of the universities have regular faculty members ranging from 11 to 4. Almost all the universities are offering 2 years master programme. While department of LIS University of Karachi has 4 years B.S programme. The results also show that very few students with library education or experience seek admissions. The job market at KPK, Islamabad and Sindh is satisfactory, while in Punjab and Baluchistan the students arc not easily adjusted. In addition to that departments of LIS at the University of Punjab, University of Karachi and University of Peshawar have almost all necessary resources and facilities. The faculty members are inclined towards research and publication. Only few departments have their alumni. The common problems of the LIS departments are lack of finances and lack of highly qualified faculty. The study also puts forward few suggestions for improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
