Not all gravure presses are used to print flexible packaging, tobacco products or high-volume glossy magazines. Many have been commissioned to print premium-quality decor products such as gift-wrap items and simulated wood or artificial stone finish paper products. These are then impregnated with special resins, dried and converted into semi-rigid sheets or synthetic veneers that are then applied to chipboard panels for furniture and kitchen work-top surfaces.rnProducts such as virtual wood laminates enhance the quality of mass-produced furniture. Even expensive quarry stones such as marble can be faithfully reproduced on a commercial scale and more cost effectively than cutting down forests, scarring the earth, and ruining the environment.rn'As the public and environmental bodies call for more ecological and natural products in packaging and furniture, the use of decorative natural and synthetic papers is set to grow,' says Tom Kerchiss of colour communication and coating system technology specialist, RK Print Coat Instruments.
