Volume and value: Growing a recycled materials market

In a recent conversation, I asked: "How do you create a market for a recycled material?" The response I received was seemingly obvious "...volume and value." Of course, you need enough volume to be able to steadily supply end markets (that is, for companies that use recovered feedstocks to make new products), and the value to the end market has to be such that the recycled feedstock-and any associated benefits (such as environmental or energy savings)-is greater than that of the value of virgin or alternative materials to drive its demand.
