There are plenty of reasons why flexible packaging has been growing rapidly in recent years, and those reasons were on full display as I sifted through the entries for the 2021 Flexible Packaging Association Achievement Awards. The awards, now in their 65th year, have served as a way to honor the many advantages that flexible packaging provides to brand owners and consumers, spanning visual components including printed graphics, functionality, sustainability, and technical innovation that takes flexible packaging to new heights. Unfortunately, much like seemingly everything else in the past year, the judging for the event took place on Zoom, rather than at FPA headquarters in Annapolis, Md. Nevertheless, it was honor to serve as a judge and contribute to a panel that also included David Luttenberger, global packaging director for Mintel; and Keith Vorst, director of the Polymer and Food Protection Consortium at Iowa State University.
