Although commercial aviation largely has recovered from the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the damage these attacks wrought on the balance sheets of U.S. domestic air carriers has allowed foreign operators to backlog coveted initial deliveries of the new aircraft currently being developed and certified, largely blocking U.S. deliveries through 2012. This imbalance leaves U.S. operators at a strategic disadvantage because they are operating older, less efficient aircraft with older, less efficient systems, that among other things, make it difficult to attract new customers.
