Fixing the SHM Value Proposition

Structural health monitoring (SHM) denotes an integrated system capable of facilitating real-time or on-demand nondestructive inspection without manual intervention. These technologies have the potential to transform MRO industry standard practices, improving vehicle safety, reliability and readiness while reducing overall life-cycle costs. Yet while numerous university laboratories, small businesses, large corporation research groups and government sub-branches have been devoted to SHM development and maturation over the past decade, alongside recurring SHM-themed conferences and workshops, no SHM systems have been fielded.
