The Brazilian Commission on Social Determinants of Health: next steps

The recognition that social factors have a decisive influence in health conditions inspired the definition adopted by WHO in 1948, where health is described as 'a state of complete social, mental, and physical well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity'. Faithful to its origins, WHO created in 2005 the Commission on Social Determinants of Health (CSDH) with the objective of promoting global awareness regarding the importance of social determinants (SDH) in the health of individuals and populations and regarding the need to combat health inequities caused by them.
