The field of adaptive optics has developed over the last 50 years from classified military work, via a large expansion in astronomical adaptive optics, to now include biophotonics, ophthalmic optics, and laser machining. For many years there was no textbook that new researchers in adaptive optics could turn to, but in 1991 Robert Tyson wrote "Principles of Adaptive Optics" which has since turned into the "standard text" in this area. The book is very much based on adaptive optics applied to the propagation of light through atmospheric turbulence. The book begins with a historical background and a description of some of the required fundamental optics, before chapter 2 goes on to discuss the sources of aberration and the theory of optical turbulence. The book then follows a "top-down" approach and discusses, in chapters 3 and 4 the general principles of adaptive optics and adaptive optics systems. This includes guide stars, anisoplanatism, errors associated with adaptive optics systems as well as allied topics such as phase conjugation and non-linear techniques. The remaining key chapters, 5, 6, and 7 are devoted to the three fundamental components of an adaptive optics system: wavefront correctors, wavefront sensors, and feedback and control. Within these areas the book covers the main topics that one would expect to see, e.g. Shack Hartmann, pyramid and curvature sensors and a range of different wavefront corrector technologies. The book finishes with a useful summary of equations.
