Huawei unveils 100-Gbps optical module based on second-generation SD-FEC

Huawei says it used a recent two-day seminar in Bern, Switzerland to reveal a new 100-Gbps optical module based on second-generation soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) technology. The new coherent transmission based module benefits from new chip technology and what Huawei asserts is the highest integration in the industry. The module can achieve "the same transmission performance as 10G, while using significantly less power," Huawei added via a press release. The module also will support transmission distances of 4000 km without electrical regeneration. The module also is compatible with 400-Gbps transmission technology, Huawei adds. The company also showed off the 2-Tbps prototype that was used in a field trial with Vodafone.
