Preparation and property study on high 248 nm light transmittance optical fiber coating

Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) can be inscribed on optical fiber by ultraviolet (UV) light. In order to increase the efficiency of coating process and ensure long-term protection of optical fiber after FBG, a coating layer with high transmittance on UV light was developed. Based on absorption theory of UV light, acrylic polyurethane resin was selected and synthesized as the fiber coating. As a result, the cured coating film has 85% transmittance on 248 nm light. The high transmittance of cured film on 248 nm light is resulted from overall influence on different functional groups in acrylic polyurethane resin. Polysiloxane is still the main constituent contributing to UV light transmittance. Moreover, 5% decomposition temperature of the coating is 355 degrees C. SEM, DSC, FTIR, and other tests were conducted. It is revealed that the cured film had good thermostability, high hardness, high adhesion, good alkali and acid resistances and water tolerance. Besides, real production was also conducted. It reveals that the acrylic-polyurethane based coating on optical fiber had both high production efficiency and acceptable quality, which shows a great application prospect.
