Bending performance of modified multi-trench fibers (MTFs) with different number of gaps is investigated and compared numerically. Excellent potential of these designs in suppression of high-order modes (HOMs), mode area enlargement and resistance to bending is demonstrated over a wide range of high-index-ring thickness, gap width and bending orientation, thanks to the index-matched coupling and leaking of HOMs. The range of highindex-ring thickness and gap width with high loss ratio (> 50) under the full range of the bending orientation angle from 0 degrees to +/- 10 degrees in two-gap-MTF is larger than that in other gap-MTFs, the gap width with high loss ratio (> 50) in two-gap-MTF is also larger than that in other gap-MTFs. But the range of bending orientation angle with high loss ratio (> 50) under the 2 mu m range of high-index-ring thickness in three-gap-MTF and four-gap-MTF is larger than that in others. These analyses are helpful to choose suitable number of gaps on the fabrication and application of gap-MTFs.
