Refinery expansion and petrochemical complex endorsed by Abu Dhabi council

Abu Dhabi's Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC) has endorsed a $1.9 billion plan to expand the Ruwais refinery and set up a major petrochemical complex alongside it, according to the Abu Dhabi-based Gulf News. The SPC, headed by the Crown Prince, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has directed the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) to proceed immediately with the front-end engineering design of the expansion and upgrading master plan. When completed early in the year 2000, the Ruwais expansion project would bring its refining capacity to some 250,000 barrels per day, with the UAE accounting for six per cent of the Arab countries' total oil refining capacity.
