Once upon a time on the Net, there was simple terminal emulation access and wonderful ASCII characters:). Next, along came Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), and the Net was transformed into a colorful, button-clicking wonderland—if you had the right kind of connections. Now, without a direct Internet connection, or an expensive by-the-hour (tick-tock) SLIP or PPP connection, you can have a graphical window onto the Internet over a simple "shell" account available from many Internet service providers.
