New Jobs Emerging In and Around Libraries and Librarianship

Opportunities have never been better for the librarian in a non-traditional setting. The Internet and cutting-edge information technology have created new jobs. The image of the profession, if not more positive than before, is certainly changing as new jobs are emerging. Now is the time for the profession to show the rest of the world what skills its members possess and how those skills mesh with the emerging job requirements. Library jobs and jobs for information professionals are changing at the same—or even greater—rate as experienced in other parts of our economy and society. Are librarians, new and old, keeping pace with these changes? Are they stuck in a traditional mind-set about their jobs and the settings for those jobs? What are some of the new horizons available to librarians willing to "think outside the box" as far as their careers are concerned? What prepares the librarian for these emerging jobs?
