Web browsers have developed rapidly over the past few years. As they have matured, their capabilities for displaying a wide variety of graphical and multimedia formats have increased. Web pages can now contain embedded sound files, video clips, plain images, three-dimensional images, virtual reality environments, and more. Users can view word processing documents or spreadsheets by downloading them in their original format. Meanwhile, email programs continue to vary greatly in terms of ease of use, portability, and document handling capabilities. And for the most part, email consists of nothing more than plain ASCII text: no bold, no italics, minimal formatting, and certainly no images or binary files. Even including proper diacritics can be difficult for most email programs.
