Uncovering Cover Stories

For a recent writing project, I was trying to demonstrate the importance of my topic (blogging, if you really want to know) by stating how many times it had shown up on the covers of prestigious journals. I'd collected a few samples, but I wanted to make sure I included all possibilities. I didn't want to miss a title because I didn't subscribe to it, was unaware the journal existed, or had glossed over the salient cover story. As I waded into this little search experience, I had that deja vu feeling—the nagging sensation that I'd written about this before. A quick search of the archives [www.iti-central.com] confirmed that, indeed, I had. The column ran in Database in February 1994 ("Covering the Story: Searching for Cover Stories," pp. 83-85), which was long before journals routinely put their content onto a Web page. The cover story for that issue, by the way, was public records information, illustrated by a somewhat odd collection of pinkish-purple gears.
