Does it seem that there are more and more conferences to attend? The proliferation of conferences is not limited to the library and information community; it affects almost every line of work, every profession, every hobby, and every topic area. Conferences can be big or small. They can be essential to the mission of a professional association or produced by profit-making companies. They can be ad hoc affairs, unconfer-ences, or camps. Speakers can be from academia, the corporate world, or nonprofits. Students might be presenting their dissertation research. Practitioners might be sharing insights derived from their work experiences. Marketers might be giving a sales pitch. Professors not only report on their ongoing research but may also have their eye on qualifying for tenure. Keynote speakers try for inspiration and, sometimes, simply want to sell their books.
